CorPower Ocean Portugal Lda was established in 2018 within the CorPower Ocean group (CPO). The operation, based in a rapidly expanding ocean energy hub in Viana do Castelo, northern Portugal, focuses on WEC technology development, ocean demonstrations and associated wave-farm support and engineering services.
CorPower Ocean has one of the largest teams of wave energy experts in the world supported by forty years of ocean energy research. It is developing a new class of high efficiency WECs, which enable robust and cost-effective harvesting of electricity from ocean waves. The company is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden with additional offices in Norway and Scotland.
CorPower has broad backing across Europe, with funders including InnoEnergy, the European Commission, the Swedish and Scottish Governments, and a series of private investors. A new investment package announced in 2021 involves further support from the European Union, through the NORTE 2020 Program operated by aicep Portugal Global (Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency) and CCDR-N (Norte Portugal Regional Coordination and Development Commission).
Meanwhile, end users including Iberdrola, EDP and Simply Blue Energy have been involved through all stages of development to ensure the product meets customer demands.
CorPower’s goal is to successfully introduce certified and warrantied WEC products in the market by 2024-2025, It aims to provide a bankable product by proving the survivability, performance and economics of a grid-connected array of Wave Energy Converters. This will ultimately allow customers to build wave farms using conventional project financing.
OPS Solutions builds on 25 years of experience of designing and manufacturing composite structures for tough conditions and demanding customers. OPS Solutions has unique capabilities in designing and building composite solutions, from design and type approval processes to prototype testing and effective large-scale production. All made inhouse in own production facilities in Kristiansand. Competence is the backbone of the operations, from engineering and design to manufacturing and installation, with formal and relevant experience across all parts of the operation. OPS team consists of highly skilled engineers, production specialists and experienced skilled workers. OPS R&D resources within composite materials ranging from MSc to PhD level and significant experience on design and Finite Element calculations of composite structures.
OPS pressure vessels are manufactured by using filament winding process, an advanced stable process providing excellent quality and process control. OPS Solutions has a large capacity advanced 5 axis filament machine for production of composite pressure vessels.
OPS solutions is continually working on developing competence on composite materials and thermoplastics across marine and offshore industries with a focus on quality and safety for both employees and the environment. As a result, OPS is certified according to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
The COMPACT Project is collaborating with the University of Edinburgh to deliver a high-quality Environmental Life-cycle Analysis (LCA). The institution hosts the Institute for Energy Systems’ (IES) FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility - developing a global reputation for collaborative marine energy collaborations, electrical machines and power systems research, for more than 40 years. The University itself has more than 30 years’ experience testing grid integration and ocean energy converters, in collaboration with leading energy converter developers in Europe. Its Policy and Innovation group has also been involved in several projects related to cost modelling and standardization.
